The same failure appears in radically different contexts: the form gets completed, the substance is missing. The structure promised to carry meaning but instead replaced it.

First-generation parents want their children to receive the Blessing. The ceremony happens. But if the child has no genuine understanding of what the Blessing means — the theology of lineage, the commitment to building love rather than falling into it — the ritual is completed without the transformation. The box is checked. Nothing changed.

A team adopts an AI harness because of benchmark scores or vendor pressure. They go through the motions: the subscription is active, the tool is installed, people try it occasionally. But no one has rebuilt their actual workflows around it. The form is in place; the compounding productivity never arrives. The tool is “adopted” and useless.
Worship singing for novelty — theology-of-corporate-singing
Corporate worship exists to instruct and build the congregation. But when song rotation is driven by the leader’s boredom or the pressure to feel current, songs cycle before the congregation has had time to internalize them. The form of worship continues. The congregational formation — people learning theology by singing it deeply — doesn’t happen.
Why this pattern recurs
In each case, something external (the ceremony, the tool, the setlist) is visible and completable. The internal condition it was supposed to serve — genuine spiritual preparation, actual workflow transformation, congregational formation — requires sustained attention and is invisible from the outside.
The structure becomes a substitute for the substance because the structure is easier to verify.

The diagnostic question
For any structure you maintain: what is this supposed to be serving, and is that thing actively happening? If the answer is unclear, the hollowing has probably already begun.
