The book reframes listening as cooperation and cooperation as relational. Children are more likely to comply when they experience the adult as having entered their world first rather than barking demands from outside it.
That is why connecting before asking matters so much. Being seen does not remove the boundary, but it makes the boundary receivable.
The pattern is relevant anywhere people are asked to follow a lead. People resist instructions they experience as dismissive long before they resist the content itself.
