“As a husband and wife have children and rise to the position of parents, they come to feel deeply how much God rejoiced when He created human beings.” (CSG 223-196)

The joy of creation that God felt when He made Adam and Eve — the anticipation, the hope, the investment — is not something humans can only imagine. It is something every parent is given the opportunity to feel. Children are the mechanism through which human beings ascend to God’s creative position.

“Your children are the way God helps you feel joy in the position of a creator, the joy God felt when He created Adam and Eve. Children are the second creation, coming through Adam and Eve.” (CSG 238-62)

This reframes parenthood completely. Having children is not a biological function that happens to carry spiritual significance. It is the act through which humans become second creators, inheriting God’s original position and experiencing His original joy.

The progression:

  1. God creates Adam and Eve (first creation, vertical)
  2. Adam and Eve unite in love; God enters their union
  3. They have children (second creation, horizontal)
  4. Through children, they feel what God felt — they inherit “the full authority of God, the great Subject of heaven and earth”

This is why married life in Unification thought is not merely permitted but spiritually necessary for full development. A person without children has not yet stood in God’s creative position.

Cross-domain parallel

In music: a composer experiences one level of joy creating a composition. A performer brings the composition to life — second creation. But when the performer teaches others who then perform the piece, a third generation of creation emerges. Each level participates in something the original creator envisioned, and each brings its own joy that the creator could not have fully imagined alone.
