Chapter 4 is unsparing toward religion that remains curved inward. Long church attendance, martyrdom, or public piety do not by themselves open heaven if the motive underneath is still personal gain, private rescue, or self-assertion.

This sharpens the meaning of devotion. The issue is not whether a person is religious, but whether love has been widened beyond the self toward God, neighbor, and family.

In that sense, self-centered devotion is not a lesser version of heaven-ready faith. It is a contradiction in terms.
