Hank’s productivity rule: “I fall downhill is what I say. I am not swimming upstream… in terms of my skill set and my toolkit and my values, I am doing the easy thing in any given moment.” The premise is unsentimental self-assessment — energy is finite, discipline is overestimated, and a plan that depends on becoming a fundamentally more disciplined person is a plan that will not execute.

Verbatim: “the idea isn’t a good idea if it’s going to require a tremendous amount of discipline from me because I know that I don’t have that discipline. Like I know what I’m working with.”

This inverts the standard productivity narrative. The standard story: the right life requires building yourself up to do hard things you do not currently want to do. Hank’s story: the right work for you is the work you already want to do, located inside the toolkit you actually have, and you find more by doing more — not by becoming the cold-plunge 5am person you fantasize about being.

The honest move is naming what you are not. Hank: “I’m not even the kind of guy who can like get up in time to go for a hike before it gets hot out.” That admission is the whole point — it removes from the strategy menu every plan that secretly assumes a different person executing it.

The hard cases. Hank concedes there are times when he does push through on something he does not want to do — but only “because of some obligation that I have that I would feel like a true monster to ignore.” Obligation is the legitimate exception; aspirational identity is not. The rule still holds: do not architect your default life around forced discipline.

Tension worth holding. This is not the same as taking the easy path on every individual decision. The toolkit itself was built by doing hard things — touring as a musician, learning kinetic typography, taking 5%-of-net-worth bets on bad ideas (see 2026-04-28-failed-projects-still-return-tools). What “falls downhill” is the strategic alignment between current self and current work, not the moment-to-moment effort inside the work.

Pastoral / mentoring application. When someone is stuck choosing between two paths, asking “which one fits who you actually are?” outperforms “which one requires you to grow more?” The first respects the toolkit; the second respects the dream. Most people pick the second, then fail to execute, then conclude they lack discipline — when the real problem was a plan that required a self they do not have.
