The mechanism. Cable news rewarded a specific verbal style — short, controlled, on-message, repeatable in clips. That style is now a tell. In long-form podcast and social formats, audiences hear talking-point delivery as evasion. The speaker who is visibly thinking out loud, even imperfectly, registers as more trustworthy than the speaker who is visibly performing a position.
Important caveat — feeling, not fact. Doss is precise: the perception is not actual authenticity. A skilled performer of authenticity (“good — really good — actually really good”) can dominate a media environment that punishes polish. This isn’t a moral story about honesty winning; it’s a media-physics story about which surface a given format favors.
Worship and preaching application. The same shift is hitting preaching. A sermon delivered in the style of a TV broadcast — perfectly cadenced, beat-engineered, applause-line structured — now reads, especially to younger listeners, as a performance to be evaluated rather than a person to be trusted. Worship leading shows the same pattern: stage banter that sounds like radio host filler creates more distance than silence.
What works instead. Concrete claims in plain words. Pauses that aren’t filled. Visible, named uncertainty when the speaker is genuinely uncertain. Specific stories instead of universal abstractions. Going off the prepared line when the room asks for it. None of this is anti-preparation — Pete Buttigieg’s clear explanations (Green’s example, ≈22:50) are heavily prepared. But the preparation is for understanding, not for sounding prepared.
Caution for ministry. “Authenticity” can become its own performed style — practiced rawness, choreographed vulnerability. The test is whether the speaker is willing to be wrong in real time, or only willing to appear to be wrong inside a controlled arc. The audience can usually tell, eventually.
