Hank Green’s claim: when one generation holds political power for decades, the country keeps electing people who can credibly speak to their origin story. The post-WWII America that boomers came of age inside — defeated fascism, booming economy, suburban optimism, moral certainty — became the template every campaign since has been graded against.

Two things stack on top of each other:

  1. The story isn’t recoverable — the postwar economy, the moral consensus, the unified national imagination are gone, not paused.
  2. The story was never universal — it was great for some on purpose, not by accident.

Younger generations inherit the rituals of a story they didn’t live and can’t return to. The nostalgia loop (every Christmas replays the soundtrack of their youth, every election re-enacts the campaign of their imagination) is real, but it isn’t navigation. It’s an heirloom.

Cross-domain — faith application. Movements have the same problem. A spiritual community that came of age in a particular crisis, founder’s era, or cultural moment can keep electing its leaders, designing its services, and writing its sermons for the world that produced its founders rather than the world its current members inhabit. The opening this leaves. Green argues the breaking of a hegemonic story is what creates room for a new one. That’s true in churches too. A movement that has lost the ability to tell its origin story to outsiders without nostalgia is, paradoxically, in the position to tell it freshly — if it can stop trying to reproduce the founders’ moment and instead carry the founders’ message into the moment its current people are actually in.
