Hook
Two versions of the same question.
Sunday-school version: Why didn’t God just forgive Satan?
Adult version: Why is the world still broken?
Same question, different tone. Both honest. Both deserve a real answer.
Most of us got non-answers:
- It’s a mystery.
- God’s ways are higher than our ways.
- We won’t understand until we get to heaven.
Not wrong. Not enough.
The logic:
- God is all-loving → He wants the world fixed.
- God is all-powerful → He can fix it.
- The world is not fixed.
- Therefore something has to give.
Three possibilities:
- He is not really all-loving.
- He is not really all-powerful.
- Our picture of what all-loving and all-powerful mean is wrong.
This sermon argues option three.
Scripture
Job 1:6-12 — Satan in God’s courtroom:
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, ‘From where have you come?’ Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.‘”
- Satan stands in God’s court.
- God speaks to him.
- God permits him to act.
- Not a defeated enemy in chains. An active adversary still in the conversation.
Revelation 12:10 — names Satan’s role:
“And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.‘”
- Satan = the accuser.
- Hebrew śāṭān literally means accuser. Greek diabolos means slanderer.
- His weapon is accusation.
Romans 8:19-22 — creation under Satan’s regime:
“For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.”
- Even creation is groaning.
- The Fall damaged the substrate everything else lives on, not just the humans.
Matthew 5:43-48 — the command:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.”
Comes back at the end of the sermon.
What Satan actually says
Common picture of Satan: cartoon devil. Horns. Pitchfork.
CSG picture: archangel with legitimate court standing, who fell, and who now uses that standing as leverage.
Satan’s courtroom argument, paraphrased from CSG (185-56, 1989.1.1; 37-254, 1970.12.27; 39-88):
“God, You established the principle of creation. According to that principle, the archangel was supposed to be loved by You to the completion level — and then loved by Adam and Eve, who would enter heaven with the archangel after that love was complete. You did not complete that love before the Fall. So You cannot now punish me without breaking the principle You established. If You break Your own principle, You stop being the God of that principle. Your whole creation collapses. So You cannot strike me. Were You not supposed to love me?”
What does God answer?
“You are right.”
Not “go to hell.” Not “shut up.” “You are right.”
The structural deadlock the Providence of Restoration is designed to work around. (See 2026-04-13-satan-exploits-gods-laws-to-prevent-restoration.)
Why God can’t just punish
If God zapped Satan at one stroke, He would confirm Satan’s claim:
- The principle of love would have been negotiable.
- The God who upholds it conditionally is not the God of love.
- The universe that runs on love would lose its grounding.
God’s faithfulness to His own principle is what makes Him God. Break the principle to win the fight and you don’t have the God anymore — you have a being who used love when convenient.
Parallel cases:
- A parent who promised unconditional love and then weaponizes it loses the trust that made the love mean anything.
- A friend who built trust over years and then breaks it for an emergency loses it permanently.
- Integrity is not separable from relationship.
(See 2026-04-13-god-confined-by-his-own-principles.)
Why God can’t just forgive
True Father, January 1, 1968 — the deeper version of the same teaching:
“If God could forgive sins so lightly, why would He not forgive the one sin that was committed in the Garden of Eden? Furthermore, if God could find a way to forgive Satan, would He not have done it? Surely He would. Nevertheless, God cannot forgive Satan’s sin, which transgressed the core principle of the universe. For God to forgive that sin would be to fundamentally undermine the universal law of love, causing the world, which was created for love, to fall into chaos. Satan violated God Himself. This cannot be forgiven.” — Rev. Sun Myung Moon (19:161, January 1, 1968), preserved in fuller form in World Scripture II
Satan’s sin is not in the same category as ours.
- Our sins violate persons. Forgivable in principle by the persons offended (and by God on their behalf).
- Satan’s sin violated the principle of love itself.
- Forgiving the violator of the principle of love = conceding the principle is negotiable.
- Negotiable principle = no foundation.
Not vindictive. Architectural.
(See 2026-05-15-forgiving-satan-would-undermine-the-universal-law-of-love.)
Why God can’t just extract
A third option: don’t forgive Satan, just remove him. Cut his influence out of creation cleanly.
True Father:
“Why can’t we cut Satan away at once? Why can the almighty God not do it immediately? It is because this problem has to do with lineage. If God tried to remove this lineage all at once He would have to exterminate the entire human race. If the blood we inherited from Satan were to be extracted, human beings would disappear.” — Cheon Seong Gyeong (188-225, 1989.2.26)
The structural fact:
- Original sin is transmitted through lineage — physical inheritance, not just spiritual influence.
- Every human carries inherited lineage from the Fall. (See 2026-04-13-the-fall-is-genealogical-not-merely-personal.)
- A clean removal of Satan’s influence would have to remove the lineage carriers — the humans who carry it.
- The disease and the patient share a body.
Not lack of power. Structural impossibility.
(See 2026-05-15-removing-satans-lineage-would-require-exterminating-humanity.)
What God can do
Three short paths closed:
- Punish — breaks His principle.
- Forgive — dissolves the principle.
- Extract — destroys humanity.
One long path remains: the Providence of Restoration.
Shape:
- Work with humanity, not against it.
- Across generations.
- Through indemnity conditions, central figures, gradual lineage restoration.
- Build a foundation Satan cannot accuse — by having free humans choose love freely, fulfilling the principle from the inside.
- Until the standard prior to the Fall is met and Satan can be expelled without breaking anything.
The (19:161) passage continues:
“This is why God had to set up the Providence of Restoration to enable humans to reach the standard prior to the Human Fall. By this means, when people reach that standard, Satan can be expelled and a new perfect Adam can appear. It has taken God six thousand years to prepare that foundation.”
Six thousand years is not God being slow. It is God being faithful — to the only path that doesn’t break what He made.
Where the Blessing fits
Our four kinds of sin:
- Personal, hereditary, collective — addressed by the sinner’s own hands. Indemnity. Repentance. Turning.
- Original — addressed by lineage transfer. The Blessing.
The Blessing is the structural cure that fits the structural problem of original sin.
- Doesn’t remove Satan’s lineage from a person (would destroy the person).
- Engrafts the person into a new lineage.
Romans 11:17-24 — Paul’s olive tree:
“You, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches.”
- Wild branch joined to a cultivated root.
- Different life flowing in from a different stock.
- Branch not destroyed. Root changed.
(See 2026-05-15-original-sin-is-the-only-sin-cured-by-transfer-not-turning for the full treatment of why this is uniquely the cure for original sin.)
Why “love your enemy” is not optional
Back to Matthew 5. Love your enemies.
CSG (219-36, 1991.8.25):
“This problem is the context for the teaching ‘Love your enemy,’ given to religious people.”
The command is not moral hyperbole. It is the only resolution to the structural deadlock.
- Hate Satan → confirm Satan’s accusation that the principle of love is negotiable.
- Accuse Satan → become evidence for his case.
- Love the enemy → deny Satan that foothold.
Same logic at smaller scale: the second voice in our heads.
- Accuser tells you that you are doomed, you should hide, you cannot change.
- That voice is Satan’s strategy in miniature.
- Refusing to listen is participation in the same providential work — denying Satan accusatory ground.
(See 2026-04-11-satans-tactic-is-accusation.)
What this means for us
God is not slow. God is faithful.
- Six thousand years of providential history is six thousand years of work through every condition that can be established without breaking His principle.
- Each indemnity met, each foundation laid, each person who walked their portion of responsibility — narrowed Satan’s accusations one at a time.
- The work is ongoing. It includes us.
Our portion of responsibility is the form God’s restoration takes through us.
- Not a metaphor.
- Not an abstraction.
- The hands you have. The lineage you are in. The conversations you can have this week. The choices you can make.
No shortcut.
- Magic-eraser hope = longing for God to short-circuit the principle He made the universe on.
- The longing is honest.
- The answer is participation, not erasure.
Closing
The two versions of the question:
Why didn’t God just forgive Satan? — He could not without dissolving the principle of love.
Why is the world still broken? — Because the only repair that doesn’t break it is the long one, and we are in the middle of it.
This week, when the why doesn’t God just fix this? frustration hits:
- Name it as the magic-eraser longing.
- Ask one question: what is the next step I can take?
- Take that step.
- Trust that God is working through participation, not through erasure.
- Your portion of responsibility is the form His restoration takes through you.
No other form available.
Let’s pray.
