Theme

The Sabbath was God’s idea, not ours. A church built on burnout is not more faithful — it is shorter-lived. Forty-year faithfulness needs forty-year pacing. Rest is obedience.

Opening (1–2 min)

“And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” — Mark 6:31

  • Notice who Jesus said this to. Not the crowd. His disciples. The ones doing the work.
  • The instruction to rest came from Jesus to the busy. That’s most of this room.
  • Some of us have fused exhaustion with faithfulness for so long we are not sure we know the difference anymore.
  • God built the seventh day into creation before sin entered the world. Rest is not a recovery from a fallen world. Rest is the design.
  • We sing now as people who are allowed to be tired, and allowed to put it down.

Runner-up quote: “To hold and fill a cup to overflowing is not as good as to stop in time. Sharpen a blade too much, and its edge will soon be lost.” — Tao Te Ching, ch. 9

Songs

  • Be Thou My Vision — the steady, slow ground beneath all service
  • Hills And Valleys — God present in both seasons; rest is not abandonment
  • 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord) — long faithfulness; sustained over decades
  • By and By — the pace of saints who finished the race
  • Blessed Be Your Name — both seasons named; rest included
  • You Raise Me Up — when the body needs to be carried, not pushed

Runner-up: Goodness Of God — for the heart that’s forgotten God is not a taskmaster

Beyond repertoire — worth learning:

  • It Is Well (Bethel arrangement, Horatio Spafford text) — long obedience song; trust under weight
  • Trust In You (Lauren Daigle) — surrender of the schedule; pairs well with a Sabbath sermon

Closing Prayer (1–3 min)

  • Father, we have confused exhaustion with faithfulness. Forgive us.
  • We have carried roles You never assigned. Forgive us.
  • We have refused to hand things down because we were afraid of being needed less. Forgive that too.
  • Today, give us permission — Your permission, not just ours — to put one thing down.
  • Show us the role we are gripping out of fear instead of holding out of calling.
  • Help us pace this for forty years. We are not in a sprint. We are in a lineage.
  • Prepare our hearts now to hear the Word — as rest, not as more weight.
  • In True Parents’ name. Aju.
