Theme
A church that has lost gratitude cannot evangelize — it can only recruit. We do not call others into something we have stopped being amazed by. Mission grows out of gratitude or it does not grow at all.
Opening (1–2 min)
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
- Gratitude is not a mood. It is a posture, and a posture can be chosen.
- Notice Paul says in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. He is not asking us to be grateful for every hard thing. He is asking us to find what is true even there.
- Why this matters this morning: we are entering a season of being sent. Sent people who have lost their wonder become hollow.
- The first witness is a person who is visibly glad to be where they are. That cannot be faked, and it cannot be skipped.
- Before we sing about anything else, we are going to remember what we have been given.
Runner-up quote: “Gratitude is not a feeling that happens to you. It is a discipline you learn.” — adapted from Henri Nouwen
Songs
- Gratitude — names the theme directly; sets the posture for everything after
- 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord) — gratitude as a counted thing, not a vague mood
- Goodness Of God — the testimony of having been carried
- Give Thanks — old, plain, congregational; the kind of song that holds up under decades
- Blessed Be Your Name — gratitude that survives both seasons
- Forever (Give Thanks To The Lord) — energetic, declarative; lifts the room
Runner-up: Thank You Lord — when the room needs the simplest possible language
Beyond repertoire — worth learning:
- Grateful (Elevation Worship) — congregational, modern; carries the theme without sentimentality
- Battle Belongs (Phil Wickham) — gratitude framed as trust under pressure; pairs well with the 1 Thess “in all circumstances” line
Closing Prayer (1–3 min)
- Father, we have come close to losing wonder.
- We have started taking the air for granted — Your presence, Your patience, the very fact that we are here.
- Reset us this morning. Not with new gifts. With fresh eyes for the gifts already in our hands.
- Make us a grateful people first, before we are anything else You ask us to be.
- Because no one is drawn into a faith carried by people who have stopped being amazed.
- Prepare our hearts now to hear the Word — as people who already have something to be thankful for.
- In True Parents’ name. Aju.
